In the race between Catholic and Protestant forces to discover and claim the great Southland, zealous Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandez de Quiros landed in what is known today as the New Hebrides. Thinking he had discovered “Terra Australis” he erected a large cross and claimed all the island and lands as far south as the pole in the name of Jesus.
On the Day of Pentecost, 14th May 1606 he dedicated it all to the Holy Spirit and named it “Austrialia del Espiritu Santo” – which means ‘Southland of the Holy Spirit”. It was 1770 when Captain Cook claimed Australia and 1788 when Rev Richard Johnson conducted the first Christian Service in this land. Today, both Catholics and Protestants call Australia “The Great Southland of the Holy Spirit”.
The Monarchy System is a fundamental part of our Christian Heritage. The King of Australia is crowned a Christian Monarch.
During a Christian Service the Monarch is given a robe to wear with these words: “Receive this imperial Robe and the Lord our God endue you with knowledge and wisdom and majesty and with power from on High. The Lord clothe you with the Robe of Righteousness and the garment of Salvation.”
