There is certainly a great deal of ignorance within and without the Church of Britain today, concerning those early days when Christian men and women suddenly found themselves confronted by invaders dressed in religious garb. As a result of this intrusion, the Bible became a closed Book to all ordinary folk who were left in deepening darkness, superstition and corruption. This was the inheritance left to our forbears by those foreigners who trampled upon apostolic Christianity in our land of long ago. It was only the hand of God raising up Wickliffe, and later the Reformers, which prevented the total annihilation of Biblical truth in Britain. This article in no way claims to be an exhaustive study of the subject, but it will give the Christian seeker and others some idea of what happened before the country was plunged into the long dark Winter between the 7th and 14th centuries. May Christians today learn to heed the dangers.
